Whether you envision your ideal bookstore as a hole-in-the-wall that sells a little bit of everything or a trendy boutique specializing in new and glossy books, organization and layout are important. The ability of customers to navigate the aisles, find genre sections, and locate the volume they are looking for will determine whether your bookstore is inviting or stuffy.

The importance of open space

Some customers may find a cramped bookstore and piles of books not on the shelves appealing, while others may not. A layout that preserves a certain amount of open space will make your bookstore attractive. Make sure that the aisles between the shelves are wide enough for two customers to walk through or browse comfortably. If you have enough space, create an open area with chairs where customers can browse books. You can put tall shelves against the walls, but use shelves no higher than 6 feet inside your store to help customers find the section they want more easily. Be sure to comply with local, state, and federal laws regarding minimum aisle space and wheelchair access in retail stores.

Organize by genre

Organizing books by category can help customers quickly and easily find the specific book they’re looking for, or leisurely browse through books of a particular genre. Commonly used classifications include fiction, science fiction, horror, romance, mystery, fantasy, poetry, drama, humor, history, biography, photography, art, travel, and DIY books. In classifications, organize books by author’s name. Organize your shelves logically so that all genres are in one general area. Customers may be disappointed if AL horror is on the opposite side of the store from MZ horror. Shelves should be clearly labeled by genre. Placing signs on the walls or tops of shelves is another way to help customers easily navigate your products.

Deals and displays

Discounted and bargain-priced books should be placed near the front of the store so that customers can’t miss them. If you plan to keep impulse items such as candy or snacks, they should also be placed near the cash register. This reduces the likelihood of a threat and also allows customers to easily see the items. It’s also a good idea to place popular, recommended, or discounted books throughout the store, at the ends of shelves, and near the checkout. Seasonal displays centered around the holidays can also trigger impulse buys from your customers.
